The establishment's capacity was increased when a new residential unit was opened in June 1996.
In May 2001 Buttermere and Windermere Units were re-roled to dedicated Juvenile Units (Under 18's).
The establishment re-roled again in 2008/09 and is now the sole dedicated Young Offender Institution for the North West.

Reception criteria: HMYOI Lancaster Farms is a dedicated closed YOI establishment with four main residential units housing convicted young adults (aged 18-21). There is a small population of IPP prisoners. The establishment predominantly serves offenders from the North West (Lancashire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester area).
Regime: Activities include Learning & Skills, providing a range of education courses, Workshops (including Painting & Decorating, Bricklaying, Joinery, Wall Tiling, Electrical Installations, Arts, IT, Catering, Motor Vehicle, Waste Management,), Horticulture, Farms & Gardens, Industrial Cleaning, Hospitality, Physical Education, Digital Publishing, Employability Skills and Business. More recently, we are piloting a production workshop with a local business.
An Offending Behaviour Programme (Thinking Skills) is offered to appropriate prisoners (Accredited). We also offer a non-accredited A – Z course. Restorative Justice Conferencing takes place.
Several partners are on-site, including Lancashire Probation Service, Manchester College, Lancashire NHS Foundation Trust, National Careers Service (Merseyside Connexions Partnership), Jobcentre Plus, CRI (substance misuse commissioned service), SOVA, POPs, Shelter and The Prince's Trust.
