Dental care for prisons



HMP and YOI Hindley opened in 1961 becoming a youth custody centre in 1983. In April 2009 Hindley became a dedicated centre for offenders under the age of 18. In December 2013 Hindley rerolled to a split site to also house Young Offenders (18-21 year olds) on 2 designated units (Elm and Fir Units).

Reception Criteria: We accept Young People (15-18) who are on remand or sentenced. Young people who are serving an IPP sentence are also accepted. Young Offenders (18-21) who are convicted long term with at least 2 years left to serve.
Accommodation: The site has seven units (Alder, Beech, Cedar, Dove, Elm, Fir and Juniper), Alder unit provides accommodation for 15 year olds, Juniper is the designated first night unit and induction unit and Elm/Fir units accommodate Young Offenders. Hindley also has a complex needs unit for young people requiring more intensive interventions (Willow) and a behaviour management unit (Sycamore).
Regime: Hindley offers a comprehensive regime that provides opportunities for both young people and young offenders to gain qualifications and to address their offending behaviour, whilst aiding them to reintegrate into society on their release. Regime provision includes learning and skills delivered by The Manchester College, a wide range of vocational training places and a comprehensive physical education programme. Hindley has a healthcare facility and a mental health day care centre.

Safeguarding & Offender Management: Hindley has extensive safeguarding and child protection arrangements in place and a multi-disciplinary team including specialist Prison Officers, Social Workers and Youth Offending Team workers provide support and direction for young people during their time in custody.
