Dental care for prisons

For candidates

There are currently over 150 prisons in the United Kingdom and more are planned to be opened in the next few years. Therefore it is highly possible that you live in a commutable distance from at least one prison.

There are different categories of prisons ranging from open prisons (Category D) to maximum security prisons (Category A). The largest houses around 1500 prisoners and the smallest around 200.

Working in a prison as a dental professional is very rewarding. Usually there are no UDA's to achieve and no laboratory costs to pay. Normal work day consists of two 3 - 3.75 hour sessions. In most prisons it is possible to work part time only(1-3 days a week).

The dental treatments carried out in prisons are mainly fillings and extractions with occasional root canal treatments and crowns.

So far there have been no complaints from prisoners about the treatment provided by our dentists. Prison work is more popular and some dentists who have started part time work in a prison are now working more days a week as it is much more rewarding and less stressful work than current NHS system.

If you are a dentist or dental nurse interested in taking up a job in a prison please use the form below to register your details. Please note that the jobs in prisons do not appear often. However, we always contact candidates who have registered their details matching the area of interest.
